Step 1:
Cut the circle out. It can be white or any colored paper that you have. Colored computer paper or construction paper are good.
Step 2:
Fold the circle in half.
Step 3:
Cut split starting at the folder side of the paper. Go toward the edge but not too close. You don’t want your circle to fall apart.
Step 4:
Cut thin strips with the computer paper turned on its side. You need about 6 strips of one color and 6 strips of another. Weave the first one starting out. Weave the second one starting in. They repeat.
This is not as easy as it looks. As soon as you got one strip woven, take a little piece of tape and tape close to the edge of the circle on both ends to hold it in place. This keeps it from slipping when you begin weaving the second strip. Weave until the circle is complete. If you have remaining strips, that is okay.
Step 5:
Fold the circle into fourths. On the folds, cut a slit that is about 6 cm. toward the center. Do not cut all the way to the middle. Your circle will become 4 pieces.
Step 6:
Fold each of the quarter pieces up toward the center. Then tape, tape, tape. If you have packing tape available and want your boat to be waterproof, that is a good option. If you only want a quick try to see if your boat will float, you do not need to use as much tape.
You have a wonderful, beautiful Vietnamese Bowl Boat. It is not about perfection. It is about the experience of creating a boat that will float. See if it floats. If not, make any needed adjustments.
