Challenge Math 1

Are you ready for challenging math word problems?

Why choose this series over another? There is a challenge folder for each elementary child.

What can we expect from the series? I was born and grew up in a simpler time. There was no public kindergarten for me to attend. I walked to and from school regardless of weather. I explored my community by playing in a large ditch behind my house, riding my bike, and drinking from the water hose. If I was hungry, I cracked pecans from an outdoor tree to keep me going until the next meal. We lived a meager life appreciating peanut butter, cereal, and canned goods.

On weekends, I spent on my grandparent’s dairy farm, getting up very early to hay the cows. We were allowed to run freely through the pastures chasing butterflies as long as we didn’t disturb the cows.

We visited their huge garden where they grew their own food. I learned the canning process so Mamaw and Papaw could have food for the winter. I learned to make cornbread, beans, and homemade biscuits. I learned to appreciate what we had and not be wasteful.

There were no computers and no distraction from social media. We had one landline phone for the family. We made weekly trips to the local library where I learned to love mysteries and biographies.

To have clothing, I learned to sew. I learned to make do with what we had. We never through away scraps. I made doll clothes and my mom, my grandmother, and her sisters made quilts.

My childhood allowed me to learn about hard-work, respect, responsibility, and always putting forth best effort.

Through my stories you will meet my parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins, and aunts and uncles.

My stories also include my marriage and our life with out two sons.

With all this being said, the stories are mostly about a different time in history, my life. These math contextual problems are child-friendly and appropriate.

Your children or students may decide they want to learn to cook, design a garden, or find ways to help others. That would be a bonus beyond the math.
